I can see at least a novella, in which both characters grow toward each other, banding together against the extremes.

Wow! What a cool short story. It immediately pulled me in which is rare. I had to finish and NOT skim! It hit me on many levels, the old school book store / library, the different personalities, the barista being friendly, the protagonist's guilt, his inhumanity and humanity at the same time. Very cool!

I hope you can get it published or perhaps just to a wider audience!
